Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship

Overview:

The Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship (WERM) program offered by Wave Hill is a dynamic and enriching youth internship initiative centered around the exploration of ecology and environmental science. Through this program, students delve into the complexities of woodland ecosystems, gaining practical skills in scientific inquiry, fieldwork, and data analysis. The mentorship aspect of WERM connects students with seasoned ecologists and researchers who guide them in their projects, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. As interns at Wave Hill, students contribute to ongoing ecological research, addressing real-world environmental challenges.

What to Expect

The program will put the students through three college courses The first two, Restoration of New York City’s Natural Areas and Mapping New York City’s Urban Environment—An Introduction to GIS are taught in the first phases. The third course, Research Methods, is taught during Phase 3. In Restoration of New York City’s Natural Areas, students will collect and analyze their data and present their findings while connecting to topics learned in the course such as forest ecology and soil science. In Mapping New York City's Urban Environment, students will complete a lab assignment based on real-world GIS applications.

Application details
  • Application Opens: December 4

  • Application Closes: March 8

  • Phase 1: July-August, 9AM-4PM, Monday to Friday

  • Phase 2: September-June, 10AM-4PM, Saturdays

  • Phase 3: July-August, 9AM-4PM, Monday to Friday

  • Students are paid $3,500 across the length of the program

  • The program encourages applicants that identify as Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and/or come from under resourced schools to apply

Application requirements:
  • Enrolled in High School

  • Strong interest in Science Research

  • Commitment to all three phases of the program

  • 16 years old by May 1, 2025

  • Ability to work independently
